Amanda, Rob, and Darren are helping build a world where ostomates feel inspired, empowered, and comfortable in their own skin.
Ostomates are more than just their stomas. We are real people with real lives who face the challenges that everyone faces – in addition to the challenges related to living with an ostomy.
Having a stoma, temporarily or permanently, is a big change in a person’s life. For some, it might take a lot of time to get used to living with an ostomy. Others, however, adjust more quickly. How you deal with it depends on you and your situation — there is no right way or wrong way.
Amanda, Rob, and Darren decided to embrace life with a stoma, and help others do the same. By sharing their experiences, they are helping build a better world for people with ostomies. Read their stories below.
After undergoing colostomy surgery as a young mother, Amanda became an ostomy advocate.
Years later, she’s enjoying where she is in life, and offering tips for living normally with a stoma.
Undergoing bowel cancer surgery and getting a stoma changed Rob’s outlook on life.
He now educates others about early cancer signs and symptoms, and offers tips for living well with an ostomy.
As a young man, Darren underwent ostomy surgery due to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
Today, he uses his open and outgoing nature to help increase awareness of IBD and break down the stigma of having a stoma.
